Overview

Michał Kowalewski at a conference
1st Hebei International Conference on Dynamical Systems, Shijiazhuang, October 2026

I am Michał Kowalewski, a PhD student at the AGH Doctoral School. I began my doctoral studies in 2023 under the supervision of Piotr Oprocha and expect to complete my thesis in 2027.

I also completed my undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Mathematics at AGH University, graduating with honors in 2023. That same year, my Master’s thesis was awarded the "Diamonds of AGH" distinction for the university's best Master's theses.

My research is focused on topological dynamics, specifically the relationship between the topological structure of a space and the dynamical phenomena that can occur on it.

Research Statement

In general, a dynamical system can be thought of as a semigroup acting on a set. I study topological dynamical systems, where the space is a compact metric space and the semigroup is generated by a single continuous, usually non-invertible, map. I am especially interested in how the topology of the space constrains or enables different kinds of asymptotic behaviour.

Many spaces that arise in dynamics, for example as attractors or inverse limits, are continua whose local structure is far more complicated than that of a manifold. I study how this structure shapes the dynamics: which properties a map on such a space can or must have. Two projects that fit this theme best are the study of tranched graphs (with Piotr Oprocha) and the proof that every nondegenerate Peano continuum admits a pure mixing selfmap (with Klára Karásová and Piotr Oprocha).

Going forward, I want to keep exploring this interplay in both directions: how the structure of a space restricts the maps it supports, and which continua arise from dynamics itself, for example as inverse limits or as attractors. I am also interested in how far topological and dynamical invariants determine a system up to conjugacy. Beyond single maps, I would like to study more general semigroup actions.

Academic Service

Alongside my research, I am active in doctoral self-government at AGH. Within the AGH Doctoral Candidates' Council I served the following roles:

  • Vice-Chair (Jan 2026 – Present)
  • Board Member responsible for Project Logistics (2025)
  • Chairperson's Representative for PBS Meetings (2024)

Since January 2026, I have also represented doctoral candidates in the AGH Senate, the Senate Committee for Science, and the Senate Committee for Statutes and Regulations.
